As part of its continuing commitment to the development of composers, book writers and lyricists of musical theatre in Australia and the nurturing of new Australian musicals, the Conservatorium of Music at the University of Tasmania has forged a unique partnership with ASCAP.
For the first time in Australia, ASCAP is seeking new musicals for their Musical Theatre Workshop to be held in Hobart, Tasmania.
Serving as artistic director for the workshop is Oscar and Grammy-winning composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz, whose credits include the Broadway smash Wicked, Godspell, Pippin, the Walt Disney films Enchanted, Pocahontas and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and the Dreamworks’ film The Prince of Egypt. The workshop will take place on Sunday 13 and Monday 14 June (Queen’s Birthday Holiday) at the Conservatorium of Music in Hobart.
Workshop participants will have the opportunity to present selections from their original works in progress for professional critique. Each session will feature prominent guests from all aspects of musical theatre including, producers, directors, performers and composers.
As a bonus to the inaugural ASCAP Musical Theatre Workshop in Australia, we are pleased to announce; through special arrangement with the management of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, two of New York’s most exciting new young writers, Justin Paul and Benj Pasek (Edges) will give a one-day masterclass, on Saturday 12 June, for workshop participants in the craft of song development and narrative storytelling for self-devised new Cabaret.
