The Cabaret Course
For the first time in Australia……
Commencing in 2010
University of Tasmania, Conservatorium of Music
Graduate Diploma in Music (Cabaret)
This course is taught in intensive mode (mostly over weekends) over two semesters of full-time study in Hobart. Part-time study options are also available.
Major areas of study are:
Cabaret Performance:
This is 50% of the course! An annual major cabaret performance based on the catalogue of living American songwriters/cabaret performers, who will come to Tasmania to assist in the preparation of their work with students.
Topics in Music:
A survey of the important developments in Cabaret as an art form: from its burgeoning popularity during the Weimar Republic years, through Speakeasies, Supper Clubs, the short-lived Manhattan club scene, self-produced show offerings, to recent trends in Cabaret as a vehicle to showcase new writing.
Music Comprehensive:
The art of song choice: interpretation, preparation and positioning of songs within a show. The study includes the use of music technologies to assist in preparation and delivery of your show.
Complementary Study:
Creating the vehicle for your own show: creating a sound, a look and flow of narrative for your audience.
“The theater is so endlessly fascinating because it’s so accidental. It’s so much like life.”
Arthur Miller (American Playwright, 1915-2005)
